United Women for Change (UW4C) is a non-profit organization formed in 2017 to empower and support underrepresented individuals in the Charlotte, N.C. region.
We are a collective of spirited, feisty, fearless women. Women (and the men who support us and the non-binary among us) who don’t believe in no. Or in limits, waiting our turn, or for someone in charge to take charge.
We got this. And we’ve got your back.
We believe in individual acts of grace – multiplied and magnified.
We believe in the power of the collective.
We believe in grassroots initiative that leads to treetop transformation.
We believe in uplifting communities and neighbors in need.
We believe in inspiring positive, sustaining change.
We believe in you, and us, and coming together.
In the six years since our formation, UW4C has focused on addressing the needs of immigrant families, socially and economically disadvantaged populations, the unhoused and underfed, women in crisis, children in need, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those seeking COVID-19 relief.
We have responded to moments. Monumental shifts. The minutes that tick and challenge us each and every day.
We have been engaged in activities which promote inclusiveness and strengthen diversity with goals centering on developing greater community awareness with a focus on improving the lives of women, social and economically disadvantaged populations, LGBTQ individuals, and those with differing abilities. UW4C is seeking consideration for the MBDA Capital Readiness program to support socially, and economically disadvantaged entrepreneurs succeed in a competitive economy.
Our Mission
The Culinary Entrepreneurship Program is dedicated to nurturing the entrepreneurial spark of minority women through education, industry training, professional development, and life and leadership skills.
In the spirit of serving many through collective action and outreach – the 12 baskets of loaves and fishes that fed multitudes – we are committed to empowering socially and economically disadvantaged women who in turn sustain families, communities, local economies – and hope.
Our initial emphasis is enabling those who seek opportunities in the culinary arts space. Women like XX and YY and ZZ who currently run ‘shadow kitchen’ businesses from their homes. (I think telling – briefly, of course! – the stories of those we intend to serve is the best way to tell our story)
Our intent is to fill the skills baskets of these creative, courageous women … shine a light on their unique talents … and serve as an approachable, one-stop resource as they work to succeed in a competitive economy.
Our Approach
We believe education empowers and uplifts. We believe equitable access to social and financial capital grows businesses, communities, futures and individual self-worth. We believe in the expanding capacity of good, gainfulness, and a tightly-knit basket to unite and inspire those it holds close.
Resume writing and professional communication, professional demeanor and attire, scheduling and attending interviews, etc.
Serve Safe certification, introduction into a professional kitchen, basic culinary skills, division of responsibility in the creation of a food product, twice weekly classes in the commercial kitchen covering the range of appropriate topics, guest lectures by local culinarians, tours of local establishments. This module will lead to hands on experience on our food truck called International Truck of Tacos (ITOT) and will also include internship placements where appropriate.
Applying for a business license, how to find startup capital, developing your idea and writing a business plan, how to budget for a soft launch. Etc. Bank accounts, accounts payable and receivable.
Weekly one hour mentorship meetings for each of our participants. We strongly believe that new employees and new business owners need at least a year of support and mentorship once they leave our program. We want to provide services in these areas: being an effective employee, handling conflicts with coworkers and supervisors, addressing sexual harassment in the work place, finding profit in doing the work you love, building lasting business relationships, and marketing your business.

Leigh Coulter is a Charlotte area culinarian and local foods advocate. With many years of experience in hospitality, food service, and food retail she brings a wealth of personal experience and a broad perspective to United Women for Change.
Starting out innocently enough in the cafeteria of Albemarle Road Middle School, she soon discovered a talent and ease in connecting with people through food.
Her experience includes volume baking, prepared foods retail, and off-site catering for two area businesses. She has also helped to open and launch a popular area restaurant and managed a wine bar.
Believing in the importance of sourcing quality ingredients seasonally and locally, Leigh took an interest in helping area growers get their products to market. She brought her marketplace knowledge, food merchandising experience, and passion to a management position at two area Farmers’ Markets in North Carolina’s Cabarrus and Union counties.
She is currently employed in a private hospitality venue where she nightly represents the masterful creations of the chef and kitchen staff to an eager and appreciative membership. A former teacher, she also mentors new staff in culinary arts, food merchandising, and sales.
Leigh is a dedicated community advocate, volunteer, and voice for positive, uplifting change. She earned her non-profit management certificate from Duke University in 2015 and stands ready to help launch Charlotte’s next new wave of entrepreneurs.
